Fantasy America

Fantasy America invites New York-based artists Nona Faustine, Kambui Olujimi, Pacifico Silano, Naama Tsabar and Chloe Wise to revisit Andy Warhol’s seminal publication, America, and contribute through their own artistic practices.

This exhibition echoes the current moment of political upheaval and social reckoning. Against the backdrop of nationwide protests in the wake of George Floyd’s murder by police, the Black Lives Matter movement, the COVID-19 pandemic and the presidential election, the works in this exhibition probe and challenge the perceptions of what America is and what it can become. Like Warhol, the artists in this exhibition hold a mirror to society, reflecting the country at a critical juncture in history. Each produces work that blurs the boundaries between form and material, offering a complex picture of contemporary American life.

Fantasy America is curated by José Carlos Diaz, chief curator. The exhibition catalogue includes contributions by Diaz, Jessica Lanay Moore, and Alan Pelaez Lopez.

Warhol and Basquiat In Focus: Works from the Permanent Collection
June 7–September 20, 2021
In a large reinstallation of the museum’s fourth-floor gallery, Warhol and Basquiat In Focus: Works from the Permanent Collection presents for the first time the museum’s near-entire holdings of artworks and ephemera related to Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988), the groundbreaking young painter who became a close friend and collaborator to Warhol in the 1980s. This presentation features photographs, paintings, sculptures, and archival material left behind in Warhol’s studio after his death in 1987, chronicling the short but vibrant friendship and working relationship the artists shared from 1982–1986.

The installation showcases the mutual trust, shared inspirations, and political concerns of Warhol and Basquiat’s collaborative works in the 1980s. The display includes Ten Punching Bags (The Last Supper), a monumental sculpture that probes issues of Catholic guilt and the impact of the AIDS epidemic. Untitled Collaboration Sculpture, created with Italian painter Francisco Clemente, references the murder of artist Michael Stewart, police brutality, and America’s history of racial injustice. Also featured are Warhol and Basquiat’s collaborative paintings.

Marisol and Warhol Take New York
October 14, 2021–February 14, 2022
Marisol and Warhol Take New York will chart the emergence of Marisol Escobar (1930–2016) and Andy Warhol (1928–1987) in New York during the dawn of Pop art in the early 1960s. The exhibition explores the artists’ parallel rises to success, the formation of their artistic personas, their savvy navigation of gallery relationships, and the blossoming of their early artistic practices from 1960 to 1968. The exhibition features key loans of Marisol’s work from major global collections, along with iconic works and rarely seen films and archival materials from The Warhol’s collection.

Born in Paris to Venezuelan parents, Marisol held a central position in the New York art scene and American Pop movement. Over time, however, she was written out of the white male-dominated Pop narrative. By situating her work in dialogue with Warhol’s, this exhibition seeks to reclaim the importance of her practice; reframe the strength, originality, and daring nature of her work; and reconsider her as one of the leading figures of the Pop era.

Organized by Jessica Beck, Milton Fine curator of art, the exhibition debuts at The Warhol and will travel to Pérez Art Museum Miami. The exhibition catalogue includes contributions by Jessica Beck, Jeffrey Deitch, Angie Cruz, Eleanor Friedberger, and Franklin Sirmans and public programming will include a film series curated by Alisha Wormsley.
