Following a month-long submission process and a one-month voting period, apexart is pleased to announce the winning exhibition proposals from their New York City Open Call. These five exhibitions will be presented as part of the organization’s 2022-23 exhibition season.
apexart Open Call exhibitions are selected through a crowd-sourced voting process, in which hundreds of anonymous proposals are rated by an international jury of more than 500 people. Without politics or nepotism, jurors review the written proposal idea, communicated in 500 words or less. This process ensures that the ideas are unique, compelling, and reflective of the hundreds of people who want to see them transformed from a proposal into an exhibition.
Five proposals were selected from 446 submissions, rated by over 600 jurors who cast over 23,000 votes, with submissions and jurors representing more than 73 countries.

Eimi Tagore-Erwin (US): KANTEN: The Limits of History
Examining the ways that art can construct and dismantle national histories, through works that visualize contested perspectives of Japan’s expansionism during the Asia-Pacific War.
Clark Stoeckley, (Kuwait): Kafala: Slavery in the Arabian Peninsula
Surveying art and activism that renounce the exploitation of migrant labor in the Arabian Peninsula, made possible through the infamous Kafala sponsorship system.
Marie Meyerding, (Germany): Defiant Visions
Expanding public perception of anti-apartheid imagery by showcasing how women photographers exercised resistance to oppression through the lenses of their cameras.
Corina Apostol, Tashima Thomas, (United Kingdom): Flora Fantastic: Eco-Critical Contemporary Botanical Art
Investigating the role of indigenous and imported plants within colonialism, through botanical economics as they relate to medicine, science, migration, and nationalism.
Julia Hartmann, (Austria): “My Pen Won’t Break, But Borders Will”
Telling exceptional stories of individual refugees, migrants, immigrants, and asylum seekers in an effort to underscore the importance of exercising solidarity beyond closed borders.
