Head of the Department of Design & Art

We are seeking a committed and team-oriented person with excellent artistic, creative or scientific expertise, a university degree and comprehensive knowledge of design, art and education.

The successful candidate will have leadership and management experience as well as business knowledge, she/he is well acquainted with the conditions of the education sector and has knowledge of the Swiss art academy landscape. She/he thinks and acts in an integrative and transdisciplinary manner and has good conceptual and organisational skills. A special communicative disposition and good knowledge of German, French and English are indispensable. You maintain a continuous exchange with actors in the art and design scene, art and cultural institutions, in Bern, Switzerland and internationally.

As Head of the Department of Design and Art (80%), you will be responsible for the staff and business management. Together with a committed team you will further develop the department within the framework of the HKB’s strategy. Your attention is also focused on cooperation with the other HKB departments, research and further education programmes. As a member of the university board, you share the overall responsibility for the HKB.

The Department of Design and Art comprises of four Bachelor’s degree programmes and three programmes at Master’s level in the fields of art, design and art education. The department is well positioned as a team and deals discursively and critically with the conditions of artistic and design education. It has an excellent infrastructure and is integrated into the attractive environment of the first comprehensive university of the arts in Switzerland.

The Bern University of the Arts (HKB) is a department of the Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) and unites a variety of artistic disciplines under one roof. It comprises of 1,200 students and develops cross-disciplinary perspectives in teaching and research. HKB offers degree programmes and continuing education in the fields of design, art, conservation and restoration, music, opera, theatre and literature.
