Ballroom Marfa is pleased to announce the opening of Immaterial, an exhibition that will focus on the physical and psychic tensions between form, color and space across varied visual and structural mediums. Curated by Executive Director Fairfax Dorn, the exhibition seeks to examine the metaphysical aspects of artistic production through a selection of artworks that challenge the use of material and space, formalism and abstraction. By using the exhibition as a forum to consider process-driven practices, Immaterial will consider art’s potential to transcend conscious states through a plurality of visual languages. The exhibition will feature work by Barbara Kasten, Rachel Khedoori, Esther Kläs, Liz Larner, Erlea Maneros-Zabala, Linda Matalon, Julie Mehretu, and Charline von Heyl, including new commissions by Rosy Keyser, Laleh Khorramian, Heather Rowe, and Erin Shirreff.
The thematic thread of Immaterial traces the relationship between the processes of abstraction, formalism, and minimalism. Furthermore, Immaterial will investigate an artist’s use of material, color, and form to produce an image or object which can create both physical and psychological spaces. The works selected for Immaterial will call into question a variety of issues: the complex relationships between color and form; the artist’s confrontation of the medium and its materiality; the artist’s interpretation of time, space, and perception; the intuitive process; and the act of making material immaterial.
To inaugurate Immaterial, Ballroom Marfa will host a weekend of festivities including an opening reception on Friday 1 October, 6 – 8 pm; and a live music performance on Saturday evening 2 October, 9 pm. These events are free and open to the public.
Immaterial has been made possible through the support of the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Cowles Charitable Trust, with generous contributions by Suzanne Deal Booth, Peter and Hilary Hatch, and Ballroom Marfa Members.
Ballroom Marfa is a dynamic, contemporary cultural arts space that provides a lively intellectual environment where varied perspectives and issues are explored through visual arts, film, music, and performance. As an advocate for the freedom of artistic expression, Ballroom Marfa’s mission is to serve international, national, regional, and local arts communities and support the work of both emerging and recognized artists working in all media.
Ballroom Marfa is particularly interested in helping artists and curators achieve projects that have significant cultural impact but would be impossible to realize in a traditional gallery or museum setting.
