Witte de With presents the closing event and the subsequent opening of the two last interventions of the series Between You and I. Started in October 2009, Between You and I is a sequence of four major interventions on Witte de With’s façade, and is a curatorial collaboration between SKOR (Foundation for Art & Public Space) and Witte de With.
For this project, four international artists were commissioned to create an interface with the urban fabric of the city of Rotterdam. The series was inaugurated with the epic Feast of Trimalchio by Russian artist group AES+F, followed by Isa Genzken’s Wind, featuring the already mythologized Michael Jackson, blowing a farewell kiss to passersby.

Polder Cup by Maider López
4 September 2010
Polder Cup by Spanish artist Maider López has used Witte de With’s façade all summer as a call for participation in Polder Cup, a one-day football championship taking place in the typical Dutch polder landscape. López’s projects focus on the humorous or the extraordinary behind the ordinary. She creates events and situations for diverse groups of people to gather through a common language, in this case, football. Unlike a typical football game, López’s displaced football fields are intersected by water channels, which challenges the rules of football and encourages players to seek out new strategies of play. The choice of location reflects upon the long Dutch history of fighting against water and the tradition of building a consensus society. With this project, López transforms the polders’ historical and agricultural function by hosting a sporting match that opens the landscape up for new interpretations, challenging the way in which we perceive our spatial surroundings.
Polder Cup takes place on Saturday 4 September 2010 in the village of Ottoland and will gather more than 250 players. Join us as a spectator or help us to make this possible by volunteering. www.poldercup.nl
Between You and I – intervention 4
15-5519 by Ayşe Erkmen
11 September 2010 – 9 January 2011
Opening: 7pm Friday 10 September 2010: public conversation between Ayşe Erkmen
and Danae Mossman (Associate producer at Situations).
15-5519 is the new site-specific public intervention by artist Ayşe Erkmen that playfully engages with the tactile characteristics of Witte de With’s architecture. Erkmen will add a temporary coat to Witte de With’s building by partially covering it with a monochrome composition reminiscent of a nylon winter jacket. The work’s title, 15-5519, is the color code representing Pantone Color Institute’s proposed color of 2010. The source of the stitched pattern composition is Theo van Doesberg’s painting Contra-Composition XVI (1925). Instead of the primary and non-colors propagated by the Dutch De Stijl movement, Erkmen’s work adopts a contemporary tint of turquoise. Through Erkmen’s translation, Doesberg’s iconic work is given an alternative sculptural form, functioning as a second skin of protection for the building. 15-5519 animates the architecture and offers an uncommon physical experience for passersby and for the institution.
