The artist duo Michael Elmgreen & Ingar Dragset continuously investigate in their work how spatial designs both reflect and influence our behavioural patterns. Through a large number of sculptures, installations and performances, they have unveiled the narratives of architecture and interior designs—from their fictional domestic settings of “The Collectors” at the 53rd Venice Biennale 2009 to a dislocated fake Prada boutique in the Texan desert.
With “Celebrity – The One & The Many”, ZKM | Museum of Contemporary Art in Karlsruhe presents Elmgreen & Dragset’s first large-scale solo-exhibition in a German museum.
The exhibition, which in itself is an artificial reality, shows how contemporary media endlessly confront us with staged presentations of the ‘self,’ and it raises the question of whether we, the users, identify with being one of the ‘few,’ the ‘selected,’ or one of the many, the ‘crowd.’ The audience will experience a full-scale apartment block in one of the indoor atria of ZKM and an ostentatious ballroom in the adjacent atrium. Within these two settings, the spectators will find themselves in the active roles of voyeurs into very different lifestyles.
An extensive publication accompanying the exhibition will be published by the Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König in early 2011.
