Marco De Michelis interviews Hans Ulrich Obrist
The project will consist of approximately 25 public events, each dedicated to a specific problematic. The themes that will be discussed will range from the analysis of the diverse models of exhibition spaces; the relation between economy and art; the definition and identity of the figure of the curator, and other aspects of doing and producing exhibitions. A particular attention will be given to the Italian panorama.
Each event will be prepared through thematic dossiers that will be published, along with the documentation of the events, on the new website of Fondazione Antonio Ratti.
The project is under the scientific responsibility of the Director of the Fondazione, Marco De Michelis, with the coordination of Filipa Ramos and the collaboration of Centro ASK (Art, Science, Knowledge) of University Bocconi of Milan and of the Graduate Program in Visual and Performing Arts of the University IUAV of Venice.
The first meeting on October 23th focused on the relations between the European Art Centres and the cities that host them. The discussion has been introduced by Nikolaus Hirsch, Rector of the Staedelschule in Frankfurt, with the participation of Beatrix Ruf (Kunsthalle Zürich) and Angela Vettese (Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa, Venice). It was followed by an extended inquiry about the Spaces for Art, which gathered some of the most influential designers and theorists who have been dealing with the constitution of space for exhibitions.
On Saturday the 27th of November, Marco De Michelis will interview the upmost expert of the Contemporary Art scene Hans Ulrich Obrist. This will be the occasion to understand the curator’s perspective on the current Contemporary Art scene, its agents and institutions as well as about the present curatorial practices. This meeting will also gaze towards the future, as they will try to trace possible proposals, ideas and advices for the constitution of the perfect cultural space.
Moreover, it will also create the occasion to know more about the very recent project of extension of the Serpentine Gallery into the new Serpentine Sackler Gallery.
Hans Ulrich Obrist is Co-director of Exhibitions and Programmes and Director of International Projects at the Serpentine Gallery since April 2006. Prior to this he was Curator of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, as well as curator of museum in progress, Vienna. Obrist has curated and co-curated over 200 solo and group exhibitions and biennales internationally since 1991. Since 2005 he conceived and run the Marathon, a series of public events with leading figures in contemporary culture over 24 hours.
Marco De Michelis is professor of History of Architecture at the IUAV University in Venice. From 1999 to 2008, he was dean of the Faculty of Arts and Design at IUAV. From 1999 to 2003 he was the Walter Gropius Professor of History and Theory of Architecture at the Bauhaus-Universitat in Weimar, and from 1993 to 1996 he directed the Galleria della Triennale in Milan. Recently he was visiting professor at the department of Art History at Columbia University, New York. He is a regular contributor to many Italian and international magazines.
