Research and Experimentation in Art and Design Education
The Master of Education in Arts is two-year part-time research master (60 ECTS). The relation between practice and theory is a central feature of the program: students test, design and experiment with pedagogical models and tactics, as much as critically research them. The program has an interdisciplinary focus, allows for experimentation, is taught in English and accepts students from the Netherlands and abroad (within the EU).
The program focuses on pivotal contemporary developments and issues in art/design education, including critical/feminist/queer pedagogy, education philosophy, critical making, interdisciplinarity, museum education and participatory/collective practices. This also involves engaging with pivotal topics that mark our current condition and influences the discourse about education like intersectionality, cultural diversity and sustainability/climate crisis.
Our course welcomes enthusiastic and engaged educators/practitioners in the field of higher art/design education, as well as vocational, secondary education, museum educators and artists and designers with an interest in experimental participatory, pedagogical practices. We admit cultural practitioners working in institutional environments (schools, academies, museums), as well as outside, in more public, informal settings (workshops, labs, et cetera). In our opinion, in these kinds of collaborations and exchanges, the education of the future will take shape.

Annual open day and open information meetings
Our annual open day will take place on February 6, 2021 and this year most likely will take place on line. We warmly welcome everybody interested in the program to participate. The course director will give a presentation about the program and afterwards there is time for a Q & A with tutors and students. Besides our annual Open Day, we organize frequent open information meetings. Check our website for the latest information about the Open Day, how to subscribe and other meetings throughout the year.
Piet Zwart Institute / Willem de Kooning Academy
The Piet Zwart Institute houses the international Master programmes of the Willem de Kooning Academy, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. The Piet Zwart Institute is named after the Dutch designer Piet Zwart who worked experimentally across different media and contexts. The different programs offer a rich combination of in-depth specialization and transdisciplinary exchange with a view to imagining the future. Students and tutors come from around the globe, bringing a variety of languages, perspectives, cultural influences and international connections to an intimate learning environment. Aware of this embeddedness and wider environment, the Piet Zwart Institute is attentive to decentering endeavors, continuously shifting its axes to non-Eurocentricity.
We educate. We support. We challenge. We reflect critically. We re-invent.
