The Crack Begins Within
September 5–November 1, 2020
After more than a year of exhibitions and events, the 11th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art ended last Sunday
We are pleased that it was possible for the epilogue of the 11th Berlin Biennale to take place from September 5 to November 1, 2020. It was postponed from its initial opening date and had a shorter running time due to the pandemic. The exhibition, entitled The Crack Begins Within, presented over 260 works by more than 70 artists and collectives, including numerous new productions. The epilogue of the 11th Berlin Biennale followed a narrative curatorial process in different chapters at four exhibition venues:
KW Institute for Contemporary Art: The Antichurch
daadgalerie: Storefront for Dissident Bodies
Gropius Bau: The Inverted Museum
11th Berlin Biennale c/o ExRotaprint: The Living Archive
“The 11th Berlin Biennale has closed its doors and we are left with an overwhelming feeling of gratitude. We opened our space at the ExRotaprint complex over a year ago, since then the Biennale has unfolded as a site for dialogue and exchange. This was possible only due to the generosity of our supporters, collaborators, venue partners, participants, invited artists, guests, and the curiosity of the inhabitants of the city that welcomed the experience. Being able to open the epilogue exhibition in September 2020, after the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, was extraordinary. Although it was painful that many of the artists could not travel, they accompanied us through their works and their desires, their insistence on the need for this kind of exchange and encounter. Every single piece that made it into the show experienced its own odyssey, and its arrival felt like a small miracle.” María Berríos, Renata Cervetto, Lisette Lagnado, and Agustín Pérez Rubio (Curators of the 11th Berlin Biennale)
“The 11th Berlin Biennale found various modes to articulate solidarity, vulnerability and resistance. Topics and values that are now more important than ever. I can hardly express how grateful I am that we were able to realize this beautiful and important exhibition.” –Gabriele Horn (Director of the Berlin Biennale)
In order to make the 11th Berlin Biennale accessible to those who could not be present, a comprehensive documentation of the exhibition and the entire program of events that have taken place since September 2019 is available on our website. In addition to video tours through all of the exhibition venues with the 11th Berlin Biennale curators, the website also includes documentation of performances, talks with the artists, and material accompanying the artworks:
