Virtual conference
November 5–December 3, 2020
Over five Thursdays in November and December, Allies and Morrison will host its annual Citymakers conference. Citymakers brings together architects and planners, developers, academics, journalists and collaborators to look beyond the boundaries between practitioners and the public; between site and the city; between spaces and society. The conference will explore Msheireb Downtown Doha, one of the largest urban projects in the Gulf and wider MENA region.
Msheireb is a new compact, walkable neighbourhood knit together by shaded streets and built at a human scale. Set in the heart of a growing city, there are more than 100 contemporary buildings, each distinct yet all expressing a shared architectural language rooted in the local culture and climate. The project was masterplanned by Arup, Aecom and Allies and Morrison. Building design architects were Adjaye Associates, Allies and Morrison, Eric Parry Architects, Gensler, John McAslan + Partners, HOK, Mangera Yvars, Mossessian Architecture and Squire and Partners.
Five online seminars will examine this significant urban design and architectural undertaking as it reaches completion. We will revisit the project’s genesis and its masterplan, explore its buildings, uncover how it was delivered and debate what lessons can be learned. Moderated by Paul Finch, speakers will include key individuals in the development of the project as well as new expert voices.
Presenters and key listeners: Ada Yvars Bravo, Alfredo Caraballo, Anna Strongman, Clare Melhuish, Duncan Swinhoe, Fanos Panayides, Fatima Fawzy, Fatma Al Sehlawi, Graham Morrison, Helen Logan, Hina Farooqi, Ian Gardner, Laura Petrella, Kevin Underwood, Michel Mossessian, Olga Gomez, Peter Lau, Peter Oborn, Ricky Burdett, Robert Kennett, Salma Samar Damluji, Sebastian Spengler, Simon Gathercole and Tim Makower
