TBA has been named “America’s best contemporary performance festival of the summer,” by Claudia La Rocco of The New York Times and, according to GOOD Magazine, is “the only North American festival to examine and exalt today’s art with such breadth.” PICA posits a unique relationship between city and festival, embedding artists throughout the neighborhoods and civic spaces of Portland, and engaging audiences through workshops, community-based residencies, and a vibrant program of Institute chats and salons with presenting artists.
From September 8th through 18th, the TBA ON STAGE program draws artists from across the genres of dance, music, theater, film, and new media to propel new ideas and new forms. ON STAGE is curated by TBA Festival Artistic Director Cathy Edwards, in collaboration with Erin Boberg Doughton, Performing Arts Program Director for PICA. The main stage line-up includes commissions, premieres, and audacious new explorations including the latest work by French-Algerian choreographer Rachid Ouramdane, which delves into national identity and the very literal “body politic;” a trio of Japanese performers working in-situ in industrial Eastside Portland for Offsite Dance; and “the master storyteller” Mike Daisey, who will attempt a 24-hour monologue that weaves together stories from every time zone. Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, Andrew Dinwiddie, Taylor Mac, Rude Mechs, tEEth, zoe | juniper, Dean & Britta, Shantala Shivalingappa, and Sarah Dougher will also take the stage during these ten days of live performance.
TBA ON SIGHT is a collection of installations, projections, and live gatherings by visual artists, curated and organized by Visual Art Curator Kristan Kennedy and on view through October 30th. This year’s projects, grouped under the title Evidence of Bricks, explore the building up, but mostly tearing down, of institutions, societies, structures, and ideas. Installations and happenings created for TBA range from a site-specific video performance by Kate Gilmore; to a comic and incisive new text-based Flash animation by YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES; to a matchstick map and accompanying chapbook publication by Claire Fontaine; to the subverted trauma of Jesse Sugarmann‘s staged, slow motion car accidents. The galleries will also feature work by Anna Gray & Ryan Wilson Paulsen, Cristina Lucas, Ohad Meromi, Patrick Rock, Halsey Rodman, Mona Vatamanu + Florin Tudor, and Whoop Dee Doo.
The Festival also includes TBA ON SCREEN films and live cinema, including James Benning; TBA OUTSIDE, which expands the Festival to Portland’s public spaces, parks, bridges, and flagpoles; and THE WORKS, our late-night social hub of after-hours performance, with appearances by Shana Moulton & Nick Hallett, Miwa Matreyek, and Experimental ½ Hour.
