As part of Het verkeerde moment op de juiste plek / The Right Moment at the Wrong Place, Kinoshita cut through the walls that where built for previous exhibitions and offices in Museum De Paviljoens, and created a new interior space as extension of her installations. Several works return as Chinese whispers, changed by the passage of time, her interpretation from the present moment and the architecture of the Aue Pavilions.
Suchan Kinoshita (Tokyo, 1960) currently lives and works in Maastricht (NL). She grew up in Japan as a daughter of a Japanese father and a German mother. In 1981, she moved to Cologne to study at the Hochschule für Musik. For several years afterwards, she was connected to TAM (Theater am Marienplatz) in Krefeld, before going to the Jan van Eyck Akademie in Maastricht in 1988/89. Her background in both music and theatre are perceptible in her interdisciplinary installations. Her previous solo exhibitions include amongst others Eerste huwelijk (First Marriage) in M HKA, Antwerp (2002), Das Fragment an sich (The fragment in itself) in Ikon Gallery, Birmingham (2006–2007) and recently In 10 Minuten (In 10 Minutes) in Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2010–2011) and Stick Empathy in Mudam, Luxemburg (2011).
Museum De Paviljoens & solo exhibitions
Museum De Paviljoens is housed in the Aue Pavilions that were originally designed by Robbrecht en Daem as exhibition pavilions in Kassel’s Aue Park for Documenta IX in 1992. After 100 days in Kassel, they were relocated to new town Almere.
Suchan Kinoshita: Het verkeerde moment op de juiste plek / The Right Moment at the Wrong Place is the last one in a series of mid-career solo exhibitions of Dutch-based artists in Museum De Paviljoens. Every artist was encouraged to use the entire building of De Paviljoens to reflect on their oeuvre and simultaneously develop new work. Predecessors in this series were:
MAPPA: Yael Davids 1994–2003
People can only deal with the fantasy when they are ready for it: Job Koelewijn 1992–2004
Vertaalde Werken / Translated Works: Barbara Visser 1990 – 2006
Meschac Gaba: Museum of Contemporary African Art & More
Germaine Kruip: Only the Title Remains
This series of exhibitions is related to the project The Dutch Identity?, the framework of programming that Museum De Paviljoens explores up and through 2012.
