Participants are selected by a panel of artists who have often previously taken part in the exhibition themselves. This year they are Pablo Bronstein (whose exhibition Sketches for Regency Living was at the ICA over the summer); Sarah Jones; and Michael Raedecker.

A series of talks, artists’ salons and tours accompany the exhibition, offering a platform to discuss contemporary modes of production and structures of professional artistic development.

1 December – Charlotte Cotton, creative director of Media Space (a partnership between the National Media Museum and the Science Museum)
8 December – Kim Noble, one half of Perrier Award-winning, BAFTA-nominated experimental art-comedy duo Noble and Silver
15 December – Siobhan Davies, dancer and choreographer and recipient of the Laurence Olivier Award for outstanding achievement in dance.

Art may be the subject of education, but education itself can be an art form. A panel of speakers chaired by Ralph Rugoff, Director of the Hayward Gallery including Irit Rogoff, Professor of Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths University; and artist and a writer Dean Kenning, consider this relatively new artistic medium in relation to recent developments at the art academy.

This panel, chaired by curator and writer Teresa Gleadowe, speakers include JJ Charlesworth, associate editor at ArtReview Magazine; Adrian Searle, chief art critic of The Guardian newspaper; Melissa Gronlund; Managing Editor of Afterall journal and independent writer and curator Tom Morton tackle the nature of the ominous crisis in art criticism.

Friday Salons host discussions that address professional development for artists and arts professionals covering subjects such as art and law, self-organization, editioning and pricing of works, conservation, and innovative funding models.
The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue with an introductory essay by Professor Peter Osborne, which discusses the history and definition of contemporary and suggests how we might understand the word in relation to the artworks selected. Texts on the artists’ works are by Patrick Coyle, Siôn Parkinson, Chinmoyi Patel and Heather Phillipson.
