Ann-Sofi Sidén & Jonathan Bepler
Curtain Callers
MAP, Mobile Art Production
Curtain Callers is a new commission with distinguished Swedish artist Ann Sofi Sidén and the renowned American composer Jonathan Bepler. The project is examining the contemporary institutional theatre from within. Both artists spent time in The Royal Theatre in Stockholm, recording images and sound at the very core of fiction building and its ongoing processes, tracing the fleeting moment of release in the rehearsed ritual between the audience and the stage. The project is presented as a film Curtain Callers and a multi-channel video installation Curtain Callers (entracte). Both works are produced by MAP, Mobile Art Production, and have been recorded at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.
Magdalena Malm, MAP’s artistic director, describes the project thus: It’s fantastic to present a work where we have been able to closely follow the artistic concept and create the particular platform of collaboration required for the realization of the project.
Curtain Callers will also be shown in Gothenburg in conjunction with the Gothenburg International Film Festival in January 2012. In March 2012, Curtain Callers (The Book) will be published by the newly established publishing house Art & Theory. The book is designed by Stefania Malmsten and includes texts by Jörg Heisser, Ann-Sofi Sidén and an interview with the artists by Magdalena Malm.
ANN-SOFI SIDÉN is one of Sweden’s most established artists both at home and internationally. Since the 1990s, she has participated in several major international group exhibitions and her films have been screened at film festivals. She has held solo exhibitions at prominent museums and galleries in, among others, Vienna, Paris and London.
JONATHAN BEPLER is a composer who has received wide attention for his collaboration with Matthew Barney in the major film productions Creemaster 2, 3 and 5. He also composes music for film, theatre and dance. He has directed and acted in several operas as well as designed computer-controlled sound installations.
MAP, MOBILE ART PRODUCTION is an art producer that develops new ways of producing and presenting art. In dialogue with the artists, MAP creates conditions in which to produce new work and realise situation-specific exhibitions. MAP was founded in Stockholm in 2007 by Magdalena Malm, artistic director. As a part of its situation-specific work, MAP expanded its activities to Gothenburg in 2011.
