Kunsthal Charlottenborg fall/winter 2020

This fall and winter Kunsthal Charlottenborg presents new artistic talents from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, a solo show by internationally acclaimed artist Miriam Cahn, and a large-scale group exhibition that examines the under-explored history of Witch Hunt reflecting on social persecution in our time.

MFA Degree Show 
September 12–October 18, 2020

Afgang (MFA Degree Show) is the annual exhibition for the graduates from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ Schools of Visual Arts.

The exhibition celebrates and presents works created by the new talents from the art academy and is the culmination of their education.

28 graduates contribute individually to the exhibition, and all the works have different expressions and are a presentation of the individual artists’ work. The audience can therefore encounter painting over complex media installations to text statements and sculptural objects. At the same time, the exhibition presents a very unique image of what is happening on the stage of contemporary art. Further info here.

Miriam Cahn: ME AS HAPPENING
October 8, 2020–February 21, 2021

In her first major solo exhibition in Denmark, Swiss artist Miriam Cahn (b. 1949) unfolds her extensive body of work. The exhibition includes works done in chalk, charcoal, pastels and watercolours on paper, oil paintings on various scales—from very small to monumental—as well as photography and text.

The works address a number of important issues in our time, as seen from a feminist perspective. Drawing on experiences and observations from her own past and present, Miriam Cahn often returns to her own previous works to nurture a dialogue between the personal, the natural and the historical. An uncompromising artist, her career has seen her explore themes such as women’s rights, identity, sexuality, conflict and space. In the exhibition, these themes are presented in different, yet interconnected constellations of works. Some of the works challenge socially constructed notions and clichés about gender roles, others address the human body and how we treat each other intimately; such works examine the relationship between sex, violence and power.

Miriam Cahn: ME AS HAPPENING at Kunsthal Charlottenborg is curated by Henriette Bretton-Meyer and supported by Pro Helvetia, the Obel Family Foundation and the Danish Arts Foundation. Witch Hunt
November 7, 2020–January 17, 2021

This autumn’s major group exhibition at Kunsthal Charlottenborg focuses on the figure of the witch and the witchcraft trials in the Nordic region in the 16th-18th century. Through the lens of contemporary art, the exhibition examines this under-explored history of violence and encourages reflection on the politics of memory and social persecution in the present. The exhibition features several new commissions from younger internationally acclaimed artists and explores discriminatory fear and hatred as it spreads from both the bottom up and the top down—between neighbors onto larger communities and from governments to other political institutions.
