The spring programme at Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Copenhagen) includes: the Spring Exhibition 2012, our annual, open submission show of emerging international artists; and the latest block of our Research Programme, generated this time by ‘Dexter Bang Sinister’.

Spring Exhibition 2012

The Spring Exhibition is one of the most important open submission exhibitions in Europe, and has been held annually in Copenhagen since 1857. The 2012 exhibition features 70 participants from around the world, including many from Denmark and Northern Europe, as well as others from countries such as South Africa and the USA. As always the exhibited works cover a wide variety of genres associated with art and design, and this year’s exhibition includes a notable group of works that explores the body, performance and sexuality.

The jury for the Spring Exhibition 2012 consisted of the artists Aleksandra Mir (PO, chair) and Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen (DK), the designer Henrik Vibskov (DK), the artist-architect duo Ben & Sebastian (UK-DK) and the curator Dorothée Kirch (DE). As well as selecting the exhibitors the jury also nominated ten artists for a special jury award, the overall winner of which will be announced on the opening night. This year’s exhibition also features an audience award, which will be decided by public vote and which will be announced at a special Spring Party.

Research Programme: Dexter Bang Sinister

The New York graphic designers Dexter Sinister (Stuart Bailey and David Reinfurt) are famous for their explorations of the zone between publishing and art production. The latest block of Charlottenborg’s Research Programme is being created by the duo, working together with American writer Angie Keefer and Danish art historian Lars Bang Larsen under the compound name Dexter Bang Sinister.

The centrepiece of the programme is a psychedelic installation—a ‘black-and white sensorium’. This structure houses a number of works produced by Dexter Sinister, while around it are examples of Danish psychedelic experiments collected by Bang Larsen. As part of their programme the collaborators are also staging a number of activities, and working towards a publication based on their psychedelic research. Texts for this publication will be posted for free download at www.servinglibrary.org as they are produced over the spring and summer.
