The exhibition wir blumen at Kunstverein Hannover offers insight into one of Germany’s most interesting private art collections: that of Gaby and Wilhelm Schürmann, whose holdings include over 1000 works by numerous artists.
The drawings, objects, installations, and paintings in this exhibition—all of them specially selected for the rooms at Kunstverein Hannover—pose questions about the fundamental concepts behind art and our perception of it: whether through the exhaustively-rendered, double-sided drawings of Ane Mette Hol; in the unstable floor of a living room-like installation by Jewyo Rhii; or in painter Monika Baer’s adept gesture of quotation. Nonchalance and a deliberate break with aspirations to the sublime characterize both “Old Master” Walter Swennen’s work and that of Lone Haugaard Madsen, installed in-situ. The tour of 60 poetic works by 18 artists concludes with the small, delicate painting wir blumen (we flowers) by Miriam Cahn, a work that gives this exhibition its title and encourages further reflection on the “lightness of the fragile” in all its seriousness.
