Kunsthaus Dresden – Municipal Gallery for Contemporary Art initiates an artistic discourse that investigates current terms of exhibiting, producing and performing. The three part exhibition series focuses on conditions that shape both production and reception of art. It will be concluded by a publication that introduces some of the proposals for new artworks that have been realized in the exhibitions, documents visual and spatial modes of presentation, and theorizes the different approaches.

How does an idea materialize? When is an artwork completed? Where is the site of production? “How to Make” focuses on the different stages of artistic production—from idea to materialization. The exhibition confronts the presentation of artworks with a range of specific concepts, forms, and processes. While the verbalization of an artistic idea sometimes already constitutes the artwork, materialization mostly generates a process or an act that release transformative power. Taking key historical positions as points of departure, the exhibition builds a bridge to contemporary production.

Where does the stage end and real life begin? “Various Stages” addresses the theatrical and performative terms of contemporary artistic production. The exhibition investigates the stage both as an independent sculptural form as well as a place of interaction in which the audience is an integral part. Since every artistic expression is performative in its gesture, an artwork necessarily creates receptive and affective relations. The connections between life and stage will be negotiated in a bar, located in Kunsthaus Dresden’s storefront window. In this situation mostly local artists put together a weekly program. “Various Stages” thus involves participants emotionally and physically, intellectually and sensuously, setting Kunsthaus Dresden and its visitors in motion.

How can Kunsthaus Dresden – Municipal Gallery for Contemporary Art be newly conceived and used? “Auxiliary Constructions” raised questions as to the unique features and potentials of the venue. In the course of the exhibition the building of Kunsthaus Dresden itself became the material of artistic and architectural explorations. The limitations imposed by a Baroque building full of nooks and crannies were met by curatorial and artistic interventions that sought to alter the spatial conditions, and subversively carried them to extremes. Mostly commissioned works produced especially for this occasion intervened in a site-specific way, along and beyond the existing architectural boundaries.
