24 hours, 24 radios, 100 years of planetary wireless

On the 100th anniversary of the first global entertainment broadcast, online radio stations from across the world present Wireless, a 24-hr translingual radio broadcast about planetary wireless communication.
On August 27, 1920, “The crazy people on the roof” (Radio Argentina Society initiators Enrique Susini, César Guerrico, Miguel Mugica, Luis Romero and Ignacio Gómez) installed a smuggled Marconi transmitter on the rooftop terrace of the Teatro Coliseo in downtown Buenos Aires. This broadcast of Wagner’s “Parsifal” marked the first radio broadcast in Argentina and the first mass public entertainment broadcast in the world.
On August 27, 2020, from midnight to midnight Argentina time, Wireless explores radio pasts and futures. Wireless communications run on radio; radio waves are the medium of wireless connectivity. Through live multilingual conversation, music and sound, with a few clips from archival memory, Wireless will explore these evolving conditions—spectrum, networks, telecommunications, infrastructure, urban acrobatics, physics, insects and bats, education and equipment. Partner radios will rebroadcast the multiport stream to amplify radio investigation, experimentation, and solidarity.

We focus on topics of transportation, migration, and climate transformation. We broadcast in English, Spanish, and the languages specific to each location, composing in-situ sound portraits of transitions in time.
Centro de Arte Sonoro (CASo) is a public institution for art-based research and sound art experimentation in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Its main lines of action are: listening, community and technology. It carries out exhibitions, residences, educational activities, publications and broadcasts live 24 hours a day on Radio CASo.
