Join us for Eye to Eye, a series of intimate gallery tours of John Chamberlain: Choices led by prominent contemporary artists. These after-hours tours provide an exclusive opportunity to engage with Chamberlain’s richly diverse work, which the New Yorker calls “magnificent.” All tours are followed by a private reception.
Private Tour Led by Artist DeWitt Godfrey

DeWitt Godfrey’s large abstract sculptures mark a trajectory that shifts away from the declarative, autonomous object to structures that emphasize the relation between form and context: material, process, and environment. Godfrey’s explorative sculptural practice and distinctive networked forms are reminiscent of Chamberlain’s assemblage aesthetic as seen in the Guggenheim’s rotunda. Godfrey is an associate professor in the department of art and art history at Colgate University, New York.
Private Tour Led by Artist Huma Bhabha

Working with found and cast-off materials, Huma Bhabha imbues her sculptures with reliquary-like power, challenging the emotive range of the medium while simultaneously recalling the traditions of figurative art. For this Guggenheim tour, Bhabha incorporates her interest in the abject and alien while discussing Chamberlain’s work, taking into consideration the primitive, modern, contemporary, and global. Bhabha lives and works in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Private Tour Led by Artist Amy Sillman

Intuitively imaginative, Amy Sillman’s gestural paintings occupy her canvases with effusively hybrid delights. Drawing upon a rich repertoire of modern art vocabularies, from Willem de Kooning to Philip Guston, yet distinctively idiosyncratic, Sillman’s thickly chromatic compositions are at once both intimate and momentous. Her vividly hued palette and expressive verve evoke the vibrant physicality intrinsic in Chamberlain’s own sculptural practice and works on view. Sillman lives and works in Brooklyn, New York, and is co-chair of the painting department each summer for the MFA program at Bard College, New York.

Taught by artist and conservator Corey D’Augustine, this daylong workshop includes an introductory slide presentation and a gallery tour of John Chamberlain: Choices. In the afternoon, participants experiment with three-dimensional materials and use assemblage, collage, and sculptural techniques of the 1950s and 1960s during studio exercises.
