For the very first time, CIFO Europa, a branch to the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation based in Miami, is exhibiting a selection of contemporary artworks from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba to coincide with the 11th edition of the Havana Biennial.
On view through August 20, 2012, CIFO: Una mirada múltiple. Selections from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection, curated by Osbel Suárez, showcases a cross section of the collection and presents to the public a compilation of works by over 60 artists from North America, Latin America, Africa, Europe and Asia, who have witnessed and played key roles in changes that have occurred in the most significant trends in art over the last fifty years. Some of the artists included in this exhibition are Marina Abramović, Vito Aconci, John Baldessari, Sophie Calle, María Fernanda Cardoso, Olafur Eliasson, Tracy Emin, Eugenio Espinoza, Andreas Gursky, Mona Hatoum, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, Jenny Holzer, William Kentridge, Joseph Kosuth, Barbara Kruger, Ana Mendieta, Gupta Subdoh, Ai Wei Wei and also featuring emerging and mid-career artists who hold key significance for the Collection’s patron and CIFO’s Founder and President, Ella Fontanals-Cisneros.
This transverse and trans-historic revision of her collection of contemporary art encompasses five interrelated thematic modules that viewers can engage with at will, without having to follow a single and pre-defined itinerary. The exhibition is not based around a linear curatorial premise, which sets out a beginning and an end. Instead, viewers are free to organize their own itinerary in order to discover their personal approach at the conceptual associations intimated between the works, adopting a post-modern perspective that posits contemporary art as a plural activity that cuts across multiple discourses. CIFO: Una mirada multiple seeks to validate the challenge of visiting the exhibition by intersecting the five links that make up its internal structure: Contemporary Masters, New German Photography, Latin American Art, Photography, Video and Installation, and Outside Cuba.

About CIFO Europa
As a branch to the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), CIFO Europa was created to continue the foundation’s mission of fostering cultural exchange among the visual arts and to promote contemporary art from Latin America. CIFO is a non-profit organization established by Ella Fontanals-Cisneros and her family to support artists who are exploring new directions in contemporary art. CIFO fosters cultural understanding and educational exchange through three primary initiatives: a Grants and Commissions Program for emerging and mid-career visual artists from Latin America; an exhibitions program showcasing international contemporary art from the Ella Fontanals-Cisneros Collection at the CIFO Art Space; and foundation-initiated support for other arts and culture projects.
