Composition and Colors
Videobrasil Online
September 4–October 3, 2020
Today, September 4, marks the launch of the documentary Composition and Colors, a foray into the universe of Malian artist Abdoulaye Konaté, inaugurating Videobrasil Online, a streaming channel featuring video works and documents from the collection of Associação Cultural Videobrasil.
Konaté is one of the most prominent names in West African contemporary art. His work reinvents Mali’s rich textile tradition, making up a body of work that addresses both African and universal issues. Composition and Colors follows the artist through his country—where Konaté presents his studio and the art school he runs in Bamako—in his visit to the Guarani Mbyá tribe in Boa Vista Village, and in exhibitions in Denmark and São Paulo, as a guest artist in the 19th edition of the Biennial of Contemporary Art Sesc_Videobrasil (2018).
Directed by Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, who was nominated for an Oscar for the 2015 documentary The Salt of the Earth, the film is the latest addition to the Videobrasil Authors Collection series, dedicated to documentaries on visual artists. Composition and Colors will be on view through October 4 on the Videobrasil Online channel. Created by Solange Farkas, the platform aims to expand access to contemporary artistic production in the Global South in times of reduced mobility and the reassessment of paradigms on all fronts. It offers new programs every month, alternatingly focusing on Artists (works that follow the careers of outstanding artists from the collection), Curatorships (selections created by guest curators) and Docs (documentaries on contemporary art), all accompanied by connections that lead to a web of additional content in text and video.
