MACTE is the Contemporary Art Museum of Termoli in Italy whose remit is to promote art and culture and to enhance and manage the heritage of the Termoli Award collection.
Caterina Riva has been selected as Artistic Director by an international jury. Riva has started her term at the Museum in September 2020 while her exhibition programme will launch in early 2021.
“I am thrilled to be MACTE’s inaugural director and be able to work in my motherland,” Riva says. “Through my stewardship, MACTE will become a dedicated place for the research, development and transmission of contemporary art projects. The programme will enhance the existing collection and build on who and what has been left out. MACTE will embrace people, ideas and art projects in a gradual redefinition of languages and inclusion of other forms of knowledge.”
Caterina Riva is an Italian curator with significant international experiences and cooperation with artists and allies. She co-founded FormContent in London (2007–2011) with Francesco Pedraglio and Pieternel Vermoortel, as Director of Artspace NZ (2011–2014) she worked together with the New Zealand community as well as overseas guests. As the Curator of the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore (2017–2019) she has been exploring how digital is changing artistic production and the making of exhibitions.
Riva acknowledges the artists and curators she has been working with and learning from, she is also indebted to all the people and contexts she has been exposed to through residencies, collaborations and friendships.
An Advisory Board of Italian and international art historians and curators has been established to support the scientific work of MACTE Museum and Foundation. It is chaired by Laura Cherubini and composed of Andrea Bellini, Vincenzo de Bellis, Biljana Tomić and Giorgio Verzotti.
The MACTE Foundation was established in February 2019, with the participation of the Municipality of Termoli and the private partner Emiholding spa. Among its objectives, the Foundation aims to make the MACTE Museum a center of art and culture prompting national and international interest.
