The World Is Gone, I Must Carry You explores ways of carrying and sounding worlds.
Rare languages are an entry point for issues of translation and transmission. Five artists parse their encounters with regional and Indigenous tongues, absorbed through personal heritage, engagement with language revitalization, or as training in anthropology and linguistics. Each mobilizes a variety of media—music, film, drawing, installation—to channel their perception of these sounds and voices from the margins, within and outside normative listening practices.
The exhibition unfolds in a series of soundscapes which challenge imperialist approaches to non-dominant languages and the communities who speak them. Audio recordings—and especially archival voices—are an embodied medium that carves out space for their speakers’ subjectivity in the present, as well as a weapon to counter the politics of erasure and oblivion.
In conjunction with the exhibition, artist Synnøve Persen will present via a Zoom webinar, on October 7, Windless path, a poetic and visual journey into the music of the Sámi language. Please contact program [at] bonnierskonsthall.se to join, tickets are limited.
