Performance art and installation art are two branches of contemporary art that can be seen as a mirror image of each other. In fact, both are based in the principle of presence—of Active Presence. In performance art, it is the presence of the artist, in installation—the spectator. Thus, reflected one on the other, installation and performance art develop in different directions—opposed but superimposed—creating an axis between two poles: the artist and the spectator. Along this axis we find infinite possibilities of interaction.
Presencia activa [Active Presence]. Action, Object and Audience is comprised of works—most of these new productions specifically created for this show—that gain significance at this juncture. Performance and installation meet within the museum’s gallery walls into a diverse landscape of dynamic installations activated by the artists and/or the audience. There are works in which the audience takes a more passive role and, conversely, there are also installations whose existence depends upon their participation. Some works function in both domains. In all a unique territory is found, a place in-between genres where layered relationships uncommon to the experience of pure performance or installation reside.
