Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair

Printed Matter, Inc. is pleased to announce three fundraising editions in support of Printed Matter’s NY Art Book Fair, the world’s leading event for artists’ books, catalogs, monographs, periodicals, and zines. Created each year to help ensure that the event remains free and open to the public, this year’s editions feature works by Sarah Crowner, Karlheinz Weinberger, and Mungo Thomson. Fundraising editions will be on view and available for purchase at the Printed Matter booth (Gallery F) over the course of the book fair and also through our website.
Artist Sarah Crowner has composed a set of four silkscreen prints for the fair. The Color portfolio exposes the step-by-step sequence of building a form. Beginning with three screens on the The Color 3, one screen is added at a time until the portfolio resolves in The Color 6, complete with six screens. The process is highlighted by the slightly off-register shapes and colors, resulting in the feeling of motion and movement. The completed image is a reference to Max Bill’s cover-illustration of the 1944 catalogue Die Farbe, an exhibition in Zurich about “color in nature, art, science and technology.” The bright, angular forms (familiar from Crowner’s cut-up painting practice) are assembled in a dense geometry of overlapping colors. Working with the estate of Karlheinz Weinberger, we have created a giclée print of an image from the artist’s celebrated JEANS portfolio. Junger Mann mit Messer (Young Man with Knife), first published in the mid-’50s, shows a shirtless man in blue jeans (and magnificent belt buckle) posed in front of a curtain with a drawn knife. Weinberger, who worked under the pseudonym ‘Jim of Zurich,’ evolved a documentary style in post-war Switzerland that explored intimacy and masculinity among lovers, friends and strangers. The work is a numbered edition of 25, printed on Hahnemuhle paper and stamped on the reverse by the estate of Karlheinz Weinberger.
Artist Mungo Thomson has worked with us in producing this second edition of his portrait of John Baldessari on an antenna ball—the first edition of the Antenna Baldessari was produced in 2002. Thomson actually studied under Baldessari at UCLA, and this edition is a sort of tribute to his mentor—a transformation of the artist’s visage into a moon-faced, Santa-ish cartoon-print on a foam ball made to blunt the tip of a car aerial.
This year’s fair features a special exhibition of rare and out-of-print artist and design books by the late Italian artist Bruno Munari, presented by Edizioni Corraini. Selections from the private collection of Giorgio Maffei will be on view as well. On the occasion of the exhibition, we’re pleased to present the limited-edition Le Forchette Tote Bag published with Edizioni Corraini. The bag borrows its image from Munari’s 1959 publication Le forchette di Munari and shows a series of emoting forks to illustrate Italian hand gestures.
NY Art Book Fair 2013
Join us Thursday, September 19, from 6 to 9pm, for a free opening night preview to get an early look at the eighth annual NY Art Book Fair featuring 283 booksellers, antiquarians, artists, and independent publishers from 29 countries. The evening will featuring a live set on the steps of MoMA PS1 by MASKS (New York City-based duo Alexis Georgopoulos and Max Ravitz) and Terekke (Matt Gardner).
A dynamic program of special projects, screenings, book signings and performances will take place throughout the weekend. The Classroom—a curated series of artist-led workshops, readings, and discussions—and the annual Contemporary Artists’ Books Conference—a two-day symposium on emerging practices and dialog within art-book culture—will run throughout the fair and are free to the public. Clive Phillpot and Warren Lehrer will deliver this year’s keynote addresses. This year’s fair will also feature, among others, special programs with The Schoolyard and Small Press Dome, Friendly Fire, a Swiss Focus room, and Focus: Photography. Exhibitor project rooms are presented by FULTON RYDER, onestar press/Three Star Books, Badlands Unlimited and Yale School of Architecture. Fair exhibitions will be on view, including an extensive exhibition of book works by Bruno Munari presented by Printed Matter and Edizioni Corraini, The Ray Johnson Room, Paperwork, and the first satellite exhibition featuring artworks produced by Colby Printing Company, hosted by See.Me at 26-19 Jackson Avenue, a five-minute walk from PS1.
