The Belvedere 21 in Vienna is opening its doors to the surrounding neighborhood: numerous outdoor events are planned between July 9 and September 18, 2020. This free program is aimed primarily at the local population and will tackle contemporary challenges such as colonial history, war, and ecological damages.
Public program: “Joint Ventures. Being Outside”
Curated by Christiane Erharter and Claudia Slanar, the event series “Joint Ventures” takes visitors outdoors on six Thursday evenings. Performances, readings, concerts, film screenings, presentations, and talks—all free of charge—will take place under the theme of “being outside.” The Belvedere 21’s beautiful sculpture garden will be transformed into a community space where spontaneous gatherings and casual discussions are possible. The title also suggests meanings along the lines of “being left out,” “being excluded”—topics that are also addressed by the program. Austrian and international artists will present artistic and activist strategies for dealing with contemporary challenges like colonial history, war, and ecological catastrophies. The program likewise explores the creation of alliances and the celebration of new communities that can emerge in the process. At the first event on July 9, there will be a panel discussion about the “Yugoslavian” diaspora in Vienna including filmmaker Nina Kusturica, artist Ana Hoffner, and writers Barbi Marković and Marko Dinić. Afterwards the author Fiston Mwanza Mujila will perform Congolese Joyfulness, accompanied by the musicians Patrick Dunst and Christian Pollheimer. On July 23 the band KLITCLIQUE hosts an evening with performances by One Mother and Paula Irmschler. See detailed program for all events here.

Community outreach. Outdoors
The sculpture garden of the Belvedere 21 is surrounded by the lush Schweizergarten park, with a direct access since spring 2020. To mark this fact, curator Christiane Erharter has organized a diverse program together with two artists that establishes a connection with these neighboring green spaces. Anita Fuchs in collaboration with experts invites you to join them on three tours to explore the biodiversity of the area around the Belvedere 21. While Marlene Hausegger will set up her temporary and mobile sculpture Platz an der Sonne [Place in the Sun] at the Schweizergarten to serve as a stage for six collective actions. See detailed program for all events here.
