During the autumn of 2013, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde will present three exhibitions and one event under the umbrella of the Museum in the City project. Based on ideas of new institutionalism, the Museum in the City is an attempt to move contemporary art beyond the walls of the museum, approaching a new audience by creating a presence and encouraging interaction in public space and institutional spaces other than the museum. The Museum of Contemporary Art has been collaborating with four Danish artists on developing exhibition and event formats for these non-traditional spaces, which will be presented throughout the autumn. This involves the installation of sculptures (including interactive sculptures), performances in public space, a series of live shows in a concert hall and a collective creative action with local citizens.

Henrik Plenge Jakobsen: Kapital
With the exhibition Kapital (Capital), Henrik Plenge Jakobsen presents a semi-retrospective exhibition, which includes actions and happenings, as well as temporary works for public spaces that the artist has realized since the beginning of the 1990s. The pieces in public space are related to defining institutions in our society such as the school, the bank, the police station, etc., whereas the material exhibited at the museum are works and relics from actions and happenings. A small booklet with a city map has been produced and includes short descriptions of each work of art.

Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen & Lydenskab: Anger ist Power
In her live show Anger is Power, Lilibeth Cuenca Rasmussen will be performing at the local concert hall Gimle accompanied by the classical ensemble Lydenskab. Cuenca Rasmussen will be presenting some of her most significant performances since 2006, reproduced for the occasion together with Lydenskab. The title Anger is Power reflects the content of the songs’ lyrics, which are often concerned with questions of gender, race, identity, ego, etc.
Ticket will be on sale on the museum website.

Molly Haslund: Rock Around the World
Molly Haslund has been commissioned to create new performative and temporary sculptures for public spaces in Roskilde. For several years, Haslund, who specializes primarily in performance, has been working with a sculptural concept called “Coordination Models,” a type of interactive sculpture. Similar to playground equipment, these sculptures invite the audience to interact with the different models, as the artist does herself in her performances.

Event:
Karoline H. Larsen: All Saints’ Parade.
November 1
Karoline H. Larsen works with what she calls “Creative Actions,” projects in the public sphere that encourage individual and collective interaction and participation. The overall concept for the event in Roskilde is creating an All Saints’ Parade on the occasion of All Saints’ Night, which will be held on November 1.

In collaboration with the cultural center INSP!, Karoline H. Larsen will be facilitating workshops for different groups of citizens. The concept of the parade originates in the legend of All Saints’ Night, during which it is said the membrane separating the realms of the living and the dead is particularly thin, allowing the dead easier access to the world of the living. As a parade of and for the dead is not solely a Danish tradition, the night is framed as a multicultural event.
