In the first half of 2020 das weisse haus hosts the nomadic Museum of Capitalism, presents Yoshinori Niwa’s first solo exhibition in Austria, and highlights its studio program with the group exhibition New Home for Horses, Cats and Canaries. Under the direction of Alexandra Grausam, das weisse haus presents local and international artists focusing on archival practices, power relations in public space, or temporary inhabitance.

Yoshinori Niwa: FROM 1 OCTOBER 2017: FACE COVER BAN IN AUSTRIA
With the use of irony and the factual activation of utopian gestures, Yoshinori Niwa examines the prevailing conditions and power relations occurring in public space. The title of the show refers to a law passed by the Austrian government to ban full-covered faces in public space. This is a starting point to deal with a wide range of intertwined topics related to politics, immigration, and identity formation.

Museum of Capitalism: Archive of the Present

The show gathers materials from the Museum of Capitalism’s ongoing programming, from its founding to the present, including new images and unpublished writings. Reflecting the mission to educate our and future generations about the ideology, history, and legacy of capitalism, the museum’s archive attempts to give visibility to its own history, and the process of history-making itself.

New Home for Horses, Cats and Canaries

Inspired by the horses of Vienna, Schrödinger’s cat and coal-mine canaries, the exhibition deals with temporary inhabitance of all species. Presented as an imaginary travel agency where one encounters ghosts from the past, present and future such as empty cages with the sound of extinct birds from Vietnam, Danish donkeys roaming in the Caribbean, roasted chickens made out of discarded technological devices, and a frozen monkey quoting the New York Times: “The skies are emptying out.”

Fabian Erik Patzak: Direct Transit – as part of Erste Bank ExtraVALUE Art Award 2020

Taking public and private archival material into account, American-Austrian painter Fabian Erik Patzak delves into topics of migration, loss and multi-generational memory in order to develop the exhibition Direct Transit. As an intimate narrative based on his trans-generational experience of migration, it stimulates reflections on far-reaching socio-political and ecological issues.
studio das weisse haus 2020: It’s all about cooperating
Founded in 2013, studio das weisse haus provides ateliers for Vienna based artists, and a fully funded residency program for international artists, curators, critics and theorists. This year three major projects are organized in cooperation with Kunsthalle Wien, BLOCKFREI and ACFNY.

During her two month residency, Malou Solfjeld dives into the archive of studio das weisse haus to organize a group exhibition with current and former participants. Her curatorial focus lies on temporary inhabitance, belonging and home.
ExtraVALUE Art Award with Erste Bank and Austrian Cultural Forum New York
For the fifth time, the ExtraVALUE Art Award is awarded to an artist who has participated in the program of das weisse haus / studio das weisse haus. Fabian Erik Patzak impressed this year’s jury consisting of Timothy Furstnau, Alexandra Grausam, Christian Siekmeier and Boris Ondreička. Besides a solo exhibition at das weisse haus, the prize includes a one month stay in New York.
