Dumb Type New Project Performance 2020

Dumb Type, the leading Japanese media artist collective, will present a long-awaited new work after an interval of 18 years.

The members of Dumb Type, an artist collective founded in 1984 mostly by students of Kyoto City University of Arts, hail from various fields including video, music, design, computer programming and dance. Produced by different members from project to project, Dumb Type works traverse existing expressive forms and have received high acclaim as multimedia art both in Japan and internationally. The group’s unique activities, which explore the possibilities of a non-hierarchical means of production, remain constant even after the death of the group’s central figure Teiji Furuhashi, who succumbed to AIDS in 1995.   

In recent years, the solo exhibition DUMB TYPE: ACTIONS + REFLECTIONS at the Centre Pompidou-Metz (France) in 2018, as well as an upgraded version of the same exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo that included several new works and an extensive archive have both received much praise. 

Under the direction of Shiro Takatani who was one of the founding members, this work is the first to be presented since Voyage (2002) 18 years ago. Attendance to a work-in-progress in March 2019 totaling almost 600 people from all over Japan, and the immediate selling out of advance tickets for this performance show there is high anticipation for the event. 

The performance will take place as part of KYOTO STEAM – International Arts × Science Festival – 2020, a new arts festival with the theme of arts × science and technology that features a diverse range of programs including workshops, performing arts, interactive experiences, music and food. In addition, Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art (formerly Kyoto City Museum of Art) will reopen during the same period after a three-year interval, and the Okazaki district, Kyoto’s foremost cultural zone, is sure to be bustling as the cherry trees burst into bloom.
