Lumi Tan, Curator at the Kitchen, moderates a discussion featuring artists Rico Gatson, Lynn Hershman Leeson, and Tuesday Smillie in conjunction with We Fight to Build a Free World: An Exhibition by Jonathan Horowitz, now on view with free admission at the Jewish Museum. This conversation is part of a two-part series with artists who created protest posters for the exhibition inspired by Ben Shahn’s 1942 artwork We Fight for a Free World. The artists speak about how the works they made for the exhibition fit into their respective artistic practices and address the larger social and cultural issues that have occurred since creating the work.

We Fight to Build a Free World: Contested Monuments
The Unite the Right rally of August 2017 in Charlottesville, Virginia galvanized a national conversation about the removal of Confederate monuments that has since intensified. In conjunction with We Fight to Build a Free World: An Exhibition by Jonathan Horowitz, Jewish Museum Chief Curator Darsie Alexander moderates a discussion on the past and future of this topic with architect Mabel O. Wilson and artists Nicholas Galanin and Kris Graves. This program premiered on November 19.
