The Städelschule is proud to announce the appointment of Yasmil Raymond as Rector of the Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule and Director of Portikus for a five-year term beginning April 1, 2020. Yasmil Raymond succeeds Philippe Pirotte, who has held the office since 2014 and will continue on as Professor of Art History and Curatorial Studies.
Raymond, 42, was Associate Curator in the Department of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, since 2015. On the occasion of MoMA’s reopening, she curated site-specific commissions with artists Kerstin Brätsch, Experimental Jetset, Goshka Macuga, Yoko Ono, Philippe Parreno, and Haim Steinbach. Prior to MoMA, Raymond served as Curator of the Dia Art Foundation for six years. During her tenure at Dia, she organized many highly-acclaimed exhibitions and projects, including Allora & Calzadilla: Puerto Rican Light (2015); Thomas Hirschhorn: Gramsci Monument (2013); and Jean-Luc Moulène: Opus + One (2011), among others. She was Associate Curator at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, from 2004 to 2009, and a Senior Critic in the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Pennsylvania from 2009 to 2019. Raymond received a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999, and an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, in 2004.
The Städelschule is an Academy of Fine Arts in Frankfurt am Main. Since 1817, it has been committed to providing independent education, offering programs in Fine Art, Architecture, and Curatorial Studies. The exhibition venue, Portikus, is an integral part of the Städelschule. Formed in 1987, Portikus has established itself as an international platform for contemporary art and has been dedicated to exhibiting, publishing, and discussing the work of both emerging and established artists.
The teaching at the Städelschule supports open spaces for art and critical thinking through a variety of formats and discourses. Distingished faculty includes artists, architects, and cultural theorists such as Johan Bettum, Daniel Birnbaum, Gerard Byrne, Isabelle Graw, Judith Hopf, Hassan Khan, Philippe Pirotte, Tobias Rehberger, Willem de Rooij, and Haegue Yang.
