MFA programs in Sculpture, Image Based Media, Conceptual & Contextual Practices and Media Arts

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts invites students to apply for admission to its master’s programme starting in autumn 2020.

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1754, is a public higher fine arts education at BFA and MFA level with a thriving artistic research environment.

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts centres its activities around five themes of particular societal relevance: Imagining Alternative Futures, Diversity and Complexity, the Impact of the Digital, the Knowledge and Excellence of Art and the Economics of Art.

This means that the Academy of Fine Arts focuses its resources within these fields: An interdisciplinary research project studying digital materiality from theoretical, technological and practice-based perspectives; lectures on diversity from leading international researchers; development of the Knowledge of Art in its own right—among other things, in the form of the newly-established International Centre for Knowledge in the Arts, an interdisciplinary centre for artistic knowledge and research within arts, performing arts, music and film; a PhD research environment where topics within art history and art theory are processed and discussed; and finally, the establishment of a new forum for entrepreneurship for young artists.

The three-year international master’s programme at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts offers the following specialisations: Imagination and the creation of Images–Image based media / Narration, Time based media and Digital matter—Media Arts / 3D, Space, Body, Context–Sculpture / Art in the Public Sphere–Conceptual and Contextual Practices

The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts is located in the heart of Denmark’s capital Copenhagen in a historical building complex that serves as an art powerhouse, home to the Danish National Art Library, CPH:DOX (international documentary film festival), CHART (Scandinavian art fair) and, finally, one of Scandinavia’s largest exhibition spaces for contemporary art, Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Students and staff at the Academy of Fine Arts therefore enjoy a natural exchange with the public through talks, seminars and exhibition programmes, while the Academy of Fine Arts’ MFA graduation show is presented each year at Kunsthal Charlottenborg.

International partnerships are a strategic priority, and the Academy’s departments integrate international guest professors in their teaching.

The facilities offered to students at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts include workshops specialising in Ceramics, Metal, Wood, Plaster, 3D Print, Sustainable Materials, Video, Sound, Photography, Graphic Practices (Etching, Engraving and Lithography and Serigraphy and Risography)  and Painting and Colour. At all workshops, teaching is offered by specialised professionals.
