apexart is pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Franchise Program, presenting exhibitions in Beirut, Lebanon; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; and Detroit, Michigan, which were selected from more than 400 proposals. The winning exhibitions will be presented as part of apexart’s 2014–15 exhibition season.
The Franchise Program is one of two open calls each season that accepts proposals for idea-driven group exhibitions in New York City or elsewhere around the world. Votes are crowdsourced by an international jury of 150 people from diverse creative fields through apexart’s proprietary computer script that anonymizes and automates the process to determine which three winners will receive a budget and administrative support for their exhibitions. Democracy, meritocracy, objectivity—apexart does not affect the results of the jury. Congratulations to the following three winners:
Rachel Dedman with the exhibition Space Between Our Fingers, to be presented in Beirut, Lebanon: an exploration of outer space as image, metaphor, and utopia, as imagined by artists from or in the Middle East.
Rehema Chachage and Jan van Esch with their exhibition Beauty Salons and the Beast, to be presented in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania: using popup exhibitions in beauty salons and barber shops to experiment with community engagement.
Yvette Granata with the exhibition Detroit: Trans-Farm, to be presented in Detroit, Michigan: engaging with the world’s largest urban farming project to create and exhibit interdisciplinary urban agricultural works that blend the lines between edible, practical, artistic, and the technological.
