In a world shaped by rising populism, the trials and tribulations between lies and revelations, and fears of war and climate change, the potential inherent to the act of wishing deserves all the more attention. For the change of grievances does not begin with acquired knowledge and certain skillsets, but first and foremost with the desire to change something. With the exhibition Ingrid Godon. I wish, the Museum Angewandte Kunst invites visitors to enter a realm of new possibilities—a space that encourages the reflection on one’s own wishes and invites visitors to participate in ongoing processes, events and discussions.
The selected illustrations by the internationally renowned artist Ingrid Godon serve as the starting point for this reflection. Together with texts by award-winning poet Toon Tellegen, Godon’s images of the faces of serious children, wistful men and thoughtful women open a door for our imagination. Ingrid Godon’s books for adults and children have been published in over 40 countries and honored with numerous prizes. Her works have been exhibited in Europe, the USA and Japan. Since 2008 the portrait has become a central motif in her work. For Ingrid Godon the face with its infinitely variable configuration of characteristics such as eyes, nose and mouth has become a medium, with whose help she tells stories of what is going on inside the human being. Next to originals, the selected illustrations are presented as wall illustrations in the exhibition spaces.
For the entire duration of the exhibition, the site-specific sound installation sound 48H silence by d.o.o.r (Oona Kastner and Dirk Raulf) transforms the architecture of the Museum into a body of sound, culminating in a 48-hour live performance with well-known international musicians on the last weekend of the exhibition.
Between the wall illustrations and originals by the Belgian artist, a diverse range of sounds, music, performances and workshops invites visitors to explore, linger and wander. The entire Museum is transformed into a lively and pulsating, but also quiet and contemplative Open House. EL BARRIO offers concerts, live sets, selected menus, a screen-printing station, a pop-up cinema and a new bar landscape. The Museum’s Create department invites visitors to performances and workshops in the fields of dance, spoken word and self-empowerment.
