Starting fall 2020, CalArts’ MFA Creative Writing program will begin offering two full-tuition fellowships to members of its incoming class, an opportunity made possible through the generosity of the Truman Capote Literary Trust. While CalArts’ MFA Creative Writing Program had previously offered one full-tuition fellowship through the support of the trust, the addition of a second fellowship represents an exciting new development for the storied experimentally inclined program where students are not tracked by genre, and are encouraged to explore interdisciplinary projects and develop hybrid forms of writing. No additional paperwork or supplemental application is required to be considered for CalArts’ Capote Fellowships, as students will be nominated and chosen by CalArts’ faculty from the application pool. Applications will continue to be accepted for fall 2020 on a rolling basis.
Established in 1994 by media theorist Dick Hebdige and scholar / translator / poet Jon Wagner, CalArts’ MFA Creative Writing Program has been a bastion of unapologetically adventurous writing since its inception. With a stellar faculty, including acclaimed novelist and short story writer Brian Evenson, Shadowlands author Anthony McCann, poet Michael Leong, and experimental writer / performer Gabrielle Civil, and accomplished alumnx such as poet Douglas Kearney, memoirist Allie Rowbottom, novelist / publisher Janice Lee, and poet / visual artist Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, CalArts’ MFA Creative Writing Program offers an unparalleled environment for writers who risk.
