From 16 to 21 September, Berlin will once again become the centre of the international art world. The third Berlin Art Week will entice collectors, key players in the art world, and all those interested in arts and culture to the German capital.
Beside the art fairs abc art berlin contemporary and Positions Berlin and top notch exhibitions at renowned partner institutions such as Akademie der Künste, Berlinische Galerie, C/O Berlin, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, Haus am Waldsee, Haus der Kulturen der Welt, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, me Collectors Room, Nationalgalerie – Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (n.b.k.) and neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK), for the second time this year alternative art projects will also be participating in Berlin Art Week, highlighting the variety, creativity, experimentation, and quality of Berlin as a cultural capital.
A jury—consisting of artist Mathilde ter Heijne, art critic Kolja Reichert, and Anna-Catharina Gebbers, curator, independent writer, and lecturer—selected a number of independent, temporary art projects and alternative spaces to accompany the program of Berlin Art Week in 2014: the platform Archive Kabinett, showcasing a select range of publications, simultaneously offering a venue for lectures, screenings, and exhibitions, DISTRICT Kunst-und Kulturförderung—a space for contemporary cultural practices and research at the intersection of art and other fields of knowledge, the self-run project spaces die raum, Kinderhook & Caracas, L’oiseau présente and OZEAN, the curatorial initiative Import Projects, the traveling showroom and publishing house Scriptings, and the artist collective team titanic.
The week will kick off with a grand opening on Tuesday, 16 September, the joint opening of Berlin Art Week together with the exhibition Schwindel der Wirklichkeit / Vertigo of Reality at Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg 10.
With Vertigo of Reality, Akademie der Künste poses the question of the construction and deconstruction of reality in the arts. The exhibition presents strategies and methods of working where the artwork is only realized in and through the beholder, from closed-circuit video installations to participative performance projects and current developments in the realm of game art. Artists include Marina Abramović, Alexander Bruce, Peter Campus, Thomas Demand, Olafur Eliasson, Christian Falsnaes, Harun Farocki, Hamish Fulton, Jochen Gerz, Dan Graham, gold extra, Richard Kriesche, Bjørn Melhus, Bruce Nauman, Julian Oliver / Danja Vasiliev, Trevor Paglen, Paidia Institute, Nam June Paik, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Tino Sehgal, and Tale of Tales.
The seventh abc art berlin contemporary will be held from 18 to 21 September at Station Berlin / Gleisdreieck with around 110 individual positions of contemporary art and an extensive auxiliary program. Numerous galleries—both young and established, from Germany and around the world—will present works by artists such as Harold Ancart, Mike Bouchet, Karsten Födinger, Camille Henrot, Judith Hopf, David Maljkovic, Charlotte Posenenske, Tobias Rehberger, Daniel Roth, Analia Saban, Yorgos Sapountzis, Daniel Steegman Mangrane, Fiete Stolte, and Haegue Yang. The variety of performative and time-based works will create a lively, four-day program of performances, artist talks, musical presentation, and theatrical productions throughout the entire site. The varied program will be rounded out by the exhibition openings at the city’s galleries on Wednesday and Friday night.
With the new fair format Positions Berlin, the long-standing co-director of Preview Berlin Art Fair Kristian Jarmuschek and his team will present around 60 galleries at Kaufhaus Jandorf from 18 to 21 September. The venue—a huge building in the Wilhelminian style—qualifies superbly for the concept of the fair, which will feature an exhibition architecture that responds to the space, thus integrating it into the entire presentation. Positions Berlin wants to highlight the contemporary Berlin art world, portraying emerging positions from the city’s art schools and showing the variety of relevant and established artists, national and international. For many years now, Berlin has been the city that can offer the broadest overview of contemporary art. The fair will enable this overview and discourse again more extensively, inviting the visitor to discover new positions.
This year, Berlin Art Week is pleased to host the international conference Artfi – The Fine Art & Finance Conference in Berlin for the first time. The unique gathering, which will provide fascinating insights into the global art market, will bring together leading names from the arts sector including artists, collectors, gallerists, art directors, and entrepreneurs. The conference will feature a full-day program of talks and panel discussions appealing to both art enthusiasts and professionals alike. It is an exciting addition to Berlin Art Week, giving visitors a rare opportunity to meet the key figures of this fast-changing industry in a vibrant setting. The conference will be held in English on 17 September at Tagesspiegel headquarters, Askanischer Platz 3.
Again this year, a combi-ticket will be on offer for admission to all exhibition venues.
