Headlands Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the 46 artists and collaboratives awarded for its renowned Artists in Residence program for 2020, as well as cash awards for visual art, social practice, music, and writing—including two new awards from The Vita Brevis Club and the Gardner Family. In addition, six artists have been selected for Project Space awards. With local, national, and international artists from 10 states and 16 countries, the creative practitioners in this year’s lineup will begin arriving at Headlands in mid-March and will conduct four- to ten-week residencies through the end of October 2020. The fully sponsored, live-in residencies are designed to support and sustain the artistic process.
2020 Headlands Awards for Artists:
Chamberlain Award for social practice: Arquitectura Expandida
Supports artists who display exceptional merit in the discipline of social practice with a fully sponsored residency and a 10,000 USD cash prize.
Chiaro Award for painting: Anna Betbeze
A fully sponsored residency and 15,000 USD cash prize for an accomplished mid-career painter residing in the United States.
The Gardner Planetary Health Award: Jan Mun
A fully sponsored residency and 10,000 USD cash prize that recognizes an artist whose practice demonstrates an ongoing interest in exploring natural systems and planetary health.
McLaughlin Children’s Trust Award: Patricia Evangelista
Supports an exemplary writer with a fully sponsored residency and a 10,000 USD cash prize.
McLaughlin Foundation Award: Carolyn Yarnell
Recognizes an established artist with a clear dedication to their practice and a substantial body of work with a fully sponsored residency and a 10,000 USD cash prize.
VBC Artist Award: Anja Ulfeldt
A fully sponsored artist residency and a 10,000 USD cash prize that recognizes a Bay Area-based artist with a clear dedication to their practice.
Project Space Residencies: Autumn Ahn, Andreas Johansson, Rindon Johnson, Ramekon O’Arwisters, Genevieve Quick, WangShui
These artists will host open studio hours and a culminating Project Space installation during their stay.

Founded in 1982, Headlands Center for the Arts operates a multidisciplinary, international arts center best known for its dynamic public programs and highly lauded artist residency. Located in the coastal wilderness of the Marin Headlands within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Headlands’ historic nine-building campus is dedicated to process-driven exploration and risk-taking contemporary art in all disciplines. Headlands’ Artists Programs provide artists with opportunities for research, professional development, and peer-to-peer exchange at critical times in their careers.
