The Faena Prize for the Arts aims to foster artistic experimentation, to encourage crossover between expressions and disciplines, and to promote exploration of the infinite links between art, technology, and design. Project proposals should be submitted online here and will be accepted until January 30, 2015.
The winning project will receive a 25,000 USD prize for the artist and a budget of up to 50,000 USD to finance the work’s production for exhibition at the Faena Art Center in Buenos Aires during 2015. Two special mentions will also be awarded, each with a 1,000 USD prize. The fourth edition of the Faena Prize will call on artists or groups of artists from all over the world to develop original, site-specific projects that are in dialogue with the architecture and space of the Faena Art Center in Buenos Aires. Proposals may include installations, performances, paintings, sculptures, photographs, work rooted in design or architecture, film or video pieces, and all possible hybrids of the above disciplines.
As in all its previous editions, leading figures from the international art world will compose the jury for the 2015 prize currently the most important art prize in Argentina. Under the coordination of Ximena Caminos, the jury of the 2015 edition will include Caroline Bourgeois, the curator of the François Pinault Foundation; Rita González, curator of contemporary art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA); Katie Sonnenborn, co-director of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in New York; and Sonia Becce, a renowned independent Argentine curator.
The Jury
Caroline Bourgeois
As curator of the François Pinault Foundation in Paris, Caroline Bourgeois has curated numerous exhibitions around the world, such as The Passage of Time in Lille; A Certain State of the World in Moscow; and Who is Afraid of Artists? in Dinard, France. Between 2004 and 2008, she served as artistic director of Le Plateau, the exhibition space of the Île-de-France Regional Contemporary Art Fund (FRAC).
Rita González
Rita González is a curator, visual artist, and writer. She is Associate Curator of the Contemporary Art Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). González’s productions include distinguished short films such as her collaboration with director Jesse Lerner, titled Mexperimental, which provides an overview of experimental, alternative independent cinema in contemporary Mexico.
Katie Sonnenborn
Katie Sonnenborn is the Co-Director of the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in New York, a nine-week artist residency program that annually supports and fosters the talents of the brightest emerging visual artists. Sonnenborn worked at the Dia Art Foundation, where she began her career as Assistant to the Director Michael Govan, later serving as Director of External Affairs. She is also a regular contributor to specialized publications such as Performa, Frieze and Brooklyn Rail.
Sonia Becce
Sonia Becce is an independent curator based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She serves as President of the Gallery Selection Committee for the ArteBA art fair, and in 2013, curated the exhibitions AES+F: The Liminal Space Trilogy and Eduardo Navarro: Mercosur Legal Study III at the Faena Arts Center. She co-curated with Paulo Herkenhoff the major retrospective exhibition of Guillermo Kuitca—Works 1982–2002 at both the Centro de Arte Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid and the Museo de Arte Latino Americano de Buenos Aires (MALBA).
Faena Art Center
The FAC is a center for arts and artistic experimentation, created by Faena to present ground-breaking site-specific installations and generate ideas and conversation with the international contemporary art world, and within its surrounding community of Buenos Aires.
Inaugurated in 2011, the Faena Art Center, under the guidance and overarching vision of Director Ximena Caminos, has commissioned avant-garde artists to envision and realize major site-specific works, such as ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces by assume vivid astro focus (October 2014); Mendoza Walking by Richard Long (June 2014); Fyodor’s Performance Carousel by Fyodor Pavlov- Andreevich (May 2014); The Liminal Space Trilogy by the Russian collective AES+F (May 2013, curated by Sonia Becce); Fundación Vairoletto by Franco Darío Vico (2013 Faena Prize winner); El Aleph by Anthony McCall and Mischa Kuball; Los Carpinteros by the Cuban collective of the same name (May 2012); Walking South by Franz Ackermann (November 2012); Los Paraísos Desplegables by Manuel Ameztoy and O bicho suspenso na paisagem by Ernesto Neto (September 2011, curated by Jessica Morgan).
