Every year, the Städelschule opens its doors to the public for Rundgang. Over the course of three days, students from the classes of professors Johan Bettum, Gerard Byrne, Judith Hopf, Hassan Khan, Tobias Rehberger, Willem de Rooij, Amy Sillman, and Haegue Yang exhibit their practices and current interests. Art works are on view at two main locations, Dürerstaße 10 and Daimlerstaße 32, with the Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum nearby features moving image and film productions. Recent projects from the Städelschule Architecture Class (SAC) are presented at both Dürerstraße 10 and 24, and the Curatorial Studies program hosts the Water Cooler Talks series, directing attention to curatorial concerns and methods.
Founded in 1817, the Städelschule supports open spaces for art and critical thinking through a variety of formats and discourses. In addition to the classes, seminars in philosophy, curatorial studies, art theory and art history are conducted by professors Daniel Birnbaum, Isabelle Graw and Philippe Pirotte. This winter visiting faculty has included Nikolas Gambaroff, Tom McCarthy, and Jenny Nachtigall in the Fine Arts department, and guest professors Beatriz Colomina, Ulrika Karlsson, Peter Trummer and Mark Wigley have supervised specializations and seminars at SAC. The public lecture program of the Städelschule recently featured,Nana Oforiatta Ayim, Stefano Harney, Jane Jin Kaisen, Bhanu Kapil, Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez and Lytle Shaw, among others.
As an international platform for contemporary art, the exhibition venue Portikus is another integral feature of the Städelschule. Since its foundation in 1987, Portikus has been dedicated to exhibiting, publishing and discussing the work of emerging as well as established artists. Coinciding with this year’s Rundgang, Portikus is pleased to open Liberty, the first institutional exhibition of Argentinean artist Laura Langer, who graduated from the Städelschule in 2017. For Portikus, she interweaves pictorial gestures with spatial interventions, creating a setting that evokes the role and the political potential of the artist and passes on this question of meaning to the institution and its audience.
