The Tulane School of Architecture in New Orleans will be the epicenter of a gathering of architectural educators exploring how to shape today’s curriculum so that students are prepared to navigate a rapidly changing world when they enter the profession. What is the role of schools in educating those who will build, while our built environment becomes ever more vulnerable? What do students need to be equipped to respond to critical environmental threats such as climate change?
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) will give voice to these and other important questions at the 2019 ACSA Administrators Conference, themed “Uncertainty” and hosted by the Tulane School of Architecture, on November 7-9, 2019.
It is necessary and urgent for architectural schools, as educators of future professionals, to push for new standards and promote interdisciplinary research. The Tulane School of Architecture, located in a city and a region dealing with the most pressing environmental, social, and economic challenges, is at the forefront of redefining architectural education with its new Research Studios program that immerses students in scholarly design research focused on architecture’s capacity to address real-world environmental and social issues, such as natural disasters, sustainable urban development, and equitable access to housing.
Chairing the conference are Iñaki Alday, Dean, and Kentaro Tsubaki, Associate Dean, Tulane School of Architecture; and Michelle Addington, Dean, University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture. Speakers include: Alday; Tsubaki; Mitch Landrieu, Former Mayor, City of New Orleans; Karen Seto, Frederick C. Hixon Professor, Yale University; and Renée Cheng, Dean, College of Built Environments, University of Washington, among others.
