ARTER will host a group exhibition titled Spaceliner between 15 May and 2 August 2015. Curated by Barbara Heinrich, Spaceliner will examine the stylistic vocabulary of contemporary drawing presenting artists whose works explore the relationship between drawing and space. Spaceliner will illustrate working methods and approaches of contemporary drawing production through the works of Peter Anders, Sandra Boeschenstein, Pip Culbert, İnci Eviner, Monika Grzymala, Nic Hess, Gözde İlkin, Harry Kramer, Pauline Kraneis, Hans Peter Kuhn, Zilla Leutenegger, Pia Linz, Christiane Löhr, Ulrike Mohr, Jong Oh, Nadja Schöllhammer and  Heike Weber

As the concept of drawing expanded in the 1960s, drawing itself proliferated to other genres and media, and developed wide-ranging dialogues with installation art and sculpture, video, film and photography as well as with environmental art. In this regard, Spaceliner will attempt to prove the potential of drawing, as a contemporary means of expression, to push ahead the development of new visual ideas by means of extraordinary methods and materials. The diversity of the materials and the range of the techniques used in the production of the works (most of which were newly produced for this exhibition) in Spaceliner will underline the multi-faceted quality of drawing production.

All the works presented in Spaceliner start from a mode of thinking rooted in drawing, which differentiates the artistic results here from spatial installations in general. This approach manifests itself in both the choice of materials as well as in their use. Above all, however, it is manifested in the works’ graphic intensity and how the lines are used in, and with, the space. Thus, the works reflect on the one hand a persistent attempt to fathom the epistemological quality of the medium of drawing; on the other, the aspect of motion is substantially integrated into the works’ conception, which leads to a fundamental discussion of the tension between spatial image and actual experience in space. All the works move in the transitional zones between lines drawn and the actual physical spatial environment, and all are concerned with both the constructed spaces we live in as well as with visions of interiority.
