November 21–24, 2019
Amsterdam Art Weekend
For many centuries, the liberal climate in Amsterdam has inspired artists from all over the world to experiment and push boundaries. Nowadays the city continues to bring forward tomorrow’s biggest talents, as well as harboring internationally established artists. Amsterdam’s rich heritage, open atmosphere and intimate size provide a unique setting for the most cutting-edge contemporary art. From November 21-24, 2019, a selection of Amsterdam’s finest galleries, museums, institutions and project spaces will showcase the latest developments in contemporary art during the eight edition of Amsterdam Art Weekend.
Public Program
With 58 participating venues, over 90 events and 250+ artists whose work will be on show, Amsterdam Art Weekend 2019 is set to be one of the most comprehensive editions as of yet. The public program welcomes contemporary art enthusiasts to discover all the city has to offer through an incredibly diverse range of activities and events, including brand new exhibitions, performances, artist talks and more. Highlights include two major exhibition openings: Oude Kerk presents a site-specific installation by Argentinean artist Adrián Villar Rojas (b. 1980), and the Stedelijk Museum hosts the first European retrospective of work by Mexican artist Carlos Amorales (b. 1970). Following last year’s success, Looiersgracht 60 will host the second edition of the Printing Plant Art Book fair, providing a much-needed platform for Amsterdam’s progressive artistic print culture. Furthermore, the Appel celebrates the 25th anniversary of its curatorial program with a series of book launches and a weekend-long podcast, De Ateliers presents a major retrospective of its alumni, and the internationally renowned Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten will open its doors to the public during the annual Rijksakademie Open Studios. Professionals & Collectors Program
Art professionals and collectors from across the world are invited to enrichen their experience of the Amsterdam contemporary art scene and encouraged to exchange knowledge through a series of exclusive previews, activities and events. Partakers will have the opportunity to meet with the curators of the exhibitions during guided tours, to learn more about the city’s most impressive private collections during home visits and to immerse themselves within artistic practices during studio visits. As is tradition, professionals and collectors also get to take the first look at the brand new exhibitions of all 28 participating galleries, who will be revealing the latest work by their foremost artists during the gallery previews, prior to Gallery Opening Night. Focus Amsterdam Art Weekend
This year, Amsterdam Art has chosen to take a more inclusive approach. Participants such as CBK Zuidoost, OSCAM and The Black Archives were invited to participate in Amsterdam Art Weekend, adding to the event’s diversity and broad appeal. Furthermore, the organization has also invited several art collectors to present work from their private collections at the Amsterdam Art Gallery @ Capital C. Through the exhibition Amsterdam: Collected, which opens on November 1st and will be on view during Amsterdam Art Weekend, Amsterdam Art wants to introduce younger generations to the joys of collecting, and to inspire them to start creating their own stories through collecting art.
