The School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University is pleased to welcome Raven Chacon as the 2019 fall Audain Visual Artist in Residence.

During his time in Vancouver, Chacon, whose work spans composition, performance and installation, will be leading a series of workshops concerning the production and presentation of “scores.” Characterized by specificity and openness, reverence and irreverence, and documentation and abstraction, Chacon’s experimental scores navigate an ethics of interpretation and a politics of engagement. Workshop participants from across the School for the Contemporary Arts, the local arts community, and the public will have the opportunity to produce their own scores as well as work with a selection of Chacon’s scores, culminating in a free public performance. Chacon’s residency activities will also include a “Listening Party” with artist Gabi Dao and the Western Front’s New Music Curator Aram Bajakian and an artist talk. Chacon’s residency coincides with the exhibition Relations of Responsibility at SFU Galleries’ Audain Gallery, which includes a set of his graphic scores alongside work by Gabi Dao and Lou Sheppard.

Raven Chacon is an artist from Fort Defiance, Navajo Nation. As a solo artist, collaborator, or with Postcommodity, Chacon has exhibited or performed at Whitney Biennial, documenta 14, REDCAT, Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, Chaco Canyon, Ende Tymes Festival, 18th Biennale of Sydney, and The Kennedy Center. Every year, he teaches 20 students to write string quartets for the Native American Composer Apprenticeship Project (NACAP). He is the recipient of the United States Artists fellowship in Music, The Creative Capital award in Visual Arts, The Native Arts and Cultures Foundation artist fellowship, and the American Academy’s Berlin Prize for Music Composition. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Toronto, ON.

Audaain Visual Artist in Residence
The Audain Visual Artist in Residence (AVAIR) program brings artists and practitioners to Vancouver who have contributed significantly to the field of contemporary art and whose work resonates with local and international visual art discourses. Past residences have included Sarah Pierce, taisha paggett, Walid Raad, Jalal Toufic, Jacqueline Hoàng Nguyễn, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, Ricardo Basbaum, Hito Steyerl, and many others. The visiting artists interact with the students and faculty of the School for the Contemporary Arts as well as the broader visual arts and cultural communities and the community-at-large. In keeping with the experimental nature of the School for the Contemporary Arts the terms of engagement are open and change from artist to artist. The cornerstone of the residency is the sharing of artistic research. The program is generously funded by the Audain Foundation Endowment Fund.
