Key figures in literature, cinema and architecture have progressively and decisively placed Portuguese contemporary art on the global map. In the visual arts, the current generation enjoys excellent visibility due to its ability to orchestrate international mobility in ways that are more structured and positive than was previously possible. It also demonstrates its critical thinking in relation to modernity as a universalist utopia. These artists create contexts for the interrogation of reality. They state their wish to be part of a space-time determined by formal and conceptual statements that reflect a dynamic thrust shaped by the cosmopolitan and critical experience of a national reality. Such a reality is necessarily affected by the structural difficulties faced by the democracy into which they were born. Au sud d’aujourd’hui (South of Today) will give a voice to this generation of visual artists with an exhibition and a publication.
