Appointment of Artistic Director, Kim Inseon of Jeju Biennale 2020
Jeju Museum of Art (JMOA) is pleased to announce the nomination of Inseon Kim as the Artistic Director for the 2nd edition of the Jeju Biennale, which commences in May 2020.
The Jeju Museum of Art held an advisory committee meeting on July 2019, and has received five recommendation by active curators worldwide. The committee announced that Inseon Kim will be the artistic director of the 2nd edition of the Jeju Biennale in 2020, together with curator, Leeji Hong as part of the curatorial team. For the Jeju Biennale 2020, the curatorial team has now begun envisaging international contemporary art programs including daring Jeju artists, regional characteristics, live performance programs and events that are held in Jeju to envision a dynamic exhibition.
At the occasion of the appointment, Jeong-ju Choi, director of the Jeju Museum of Art, announced, “The preparation of the Biennale has officially begun, and the authoritative agency along with the outstanding artistic director is now nominated for the exhibiti on.” She added, “I will make the Jeju Biennale 2020 as an interdisciplinary platform and differentiate it from the past Biennale, yet to remain committed to Jeju Island’s unique identity.”
Inseon Kim has served as a representative of SPACE Willing N Dealing to several international exhibitions, including The Way a Hare transforms into a Turtle on the occasion of the 60 years of diplomatic relations between Korea and Denmark, Scenographic Imagination at Beijing Commune, and Spirit from Object at Contemporary Art Space Osaka. She was the secretary general of Anyang Public Art Project (2005), the producer of Busan Biennale (2012), co-curator of Busan Biennale (2006), exhibition coordinator of Gwangju Biennale (2002), the art director of Interalia Art Company, chief curator of Daelim Museum, assistant director of Kukje Gallery, and curator of Alternative Space Loop.

Jeju Biennale is a public sphere that aims to combine Jeju’s existing cultural heritage with cultural art. This is in union to effectively explore and reveal the contemporary characteristics in Jeju. Such a platform aims not only to promote a seamless network between various activities of the cultural art, institutions, space and people, but to expand and reproduce cultural resources rooted in Jeju’s society. In addition, this event will inaugurate an international networking opportunity, while achieving a biennale that reflects the social responsibility of art. Through this, a new model and vision that encompasses international dialogue is to be achieved with changes seen on the grassroots level. Jeju Biennale, an open platform, where the discussions and actions between entities never envisioned, can be commingled.
