Accelerator is an exhibition space where art, science and social issues meet. Here, Swedish and international contemporary art is presented with the ambition to spark discussion and interdisciplinary dialogue about current issues. Accelerator is part of Stockholm University, its inaugural exhibition is This progress by Tino Sehgal. The next exhibition to follow will be the first presentation in Sweden of the French artist Cyprien Gaillard. After the turn of the year, the Stockholm-based artist Johanna Gustafsson Fürst will fill the entire art space with the most comprehensive exhibition to date of her oeuvre.
The presentation of Tino Sehgal’s This progress at Accelerator springs partly from the University context, since several of the participants are researchers at Stockholm University. Reflections on progress are addressed also in Cyprien Gaillard’s artistic practice but from an entirely different angle, through works where time is neither progressive nor linear but cyclical.
Accelerator’s major show in spring 2020 features Johanna Gustafsson Fürst with new works made specifically for Accelerator while the exhibition space was being built. Gustafsson Fürst’s practice often focuses on the links between social systems and individuals, and the importance of safeguarding pluralism. Accelerator has invited individual researchers in language and linguistics at Stockholm University to collaborate with Gustafsson Fürst in the production of this exhibition.
“In these times of polarised opinions and specialisation, the gap is widening between people’s world views and their perception of what is fact and what is fiction. Accelerator’s core mission is to show art that stimulates discussion, hopefully between individuals with contrasting interests and opinions, and between disciplines that rarely meet. It is our ambition that Accelerator’s overall programme will contribute to an open and empathetic society.” –Richard Julin, Artistic Director of Accelerator.
