The VCUarts Painting + Printmaking MFA provides an affordable opportunity for artists to develop their practice through intensive critique, immersive seminars in theory and criticism, and teaching experience. In addition, VCUarts offers a number of professional development opportunities including research grants.
Each semester, a visiting professor teaches the Graduate Seminar course and conducts bi-weekly individual critiques. Additionally, visiting artists, curators, and critics give lectures and conduct studio visits. Recent visiting artists, curators, and critics include: Kamrooz Aram, Dan Byers, Alejandro Cesarco, Galit Eilat, Nicole Eisenman, Rochelle Feinstein, Tomashi Jackson, Stanya Kahn, Sohrab Mohebbi, Aliza Nissenbaum, Joseph del Pesco, Ulrike Müller, Kenny Rivero, Tschabalala Self, and Wendy Vogel.
Travel experiences are a crucial element of the curriculum. Students have visited curators, artists, residencies, and galleries in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as well as Documenta 14, Sculpture Project Münster, and Berlin Art Week, The Carnegie International and art events in New York, Los Angeles, Lima, and Beijing. All MFA students can participate in regular exhibitions of VCUarts alumni in New York City. Alumni have the opportunity to participate in the Wurtzel Residency in Italy as well as a post graduate fellowship at SOMA in Mexico City.
