Two new academic positions, RMIT Interior Design

The School of Architecture and Urban Design delivers innovative scholarship in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and related fields of design. Innovation in learning and teaching is a key strength of the school. Practice-based and vertically integrated scholarship involving students, staff and practitioners provides an engagement in research-led design projects. The School is leading the establishment of international excellence in research which is aligned to and working with RMIT’s global network of partnerships, industries and cities, another of the University’s key strategic aims. It is recognised as the world leader in Design Practice Research with distinguished practitioner PhD cohorts geographically clustered around activities in Melbourne, Barcelona and Ho Chi Minh City.
Interior Design at RMIT University is engaged as an expansive practice that addresses the relation between people and their environments—how we live, work, learn and play—in a dynamic and changing world. A global leader in Interior Design education and research, we position interior design as a critical practice that contributes to and transforms social, cultural, technological and environmental conditions in the twenty-first century. In 2020, a Master of Interior Design will commence and become part of the discipline stream which includes the Bachelor of Interior Design (Hons) and PhD by practice research. The discipline staff is currently composed of 12 academics who have practice backgrounds in interior design, architecture, curation, installation art, sculpture, digital design, history and writing.
Roles and responsibilities
We are seeking applicants who can bring to the Interior Design Discipline contemporary expertise and leadership—in particular, we welcome applicants who have experience in Asia and/or expertise in the areas of communication and/or technology.
We are looking to appoint an Associate Professor and a Senior Lecturer. Both are full-time positions. A part-time fraction will be considered if requested. (AUS 118,291 to 156,921p.a + 17% superannuation)
The Associate Professor will contribute to the leadership of outstanding teaching, research and scholarship activities of the Interior Design Discipline. You will lead advancement of teaching; lead research contribution in your area of practice research at national and international level; identify and attract external research funding; supervise higher degree by research candidates. You will make a significant contribution to the governance and collegial life inside and outside of the University.
The Senior Lecturer will foster an excellent student experience and be responsible for developing, teaching and coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Interior Design. You will make original contributions in teaching and/or scholarship which expand knowledge or practice within the Discipline; conduct and lead high quality research recognised at a national level; regularly publish research results in high quality outlets; identify appropriate funding sources and prepare successful external research funding submissions; oversee higher degree by research candidates.
To be considered for this opportunity, you will have qualifications and industry expertise in a relevant or associate discipline. Ideally you will bring outstanding creative practice and undertake research activities that engage with contemporary approaches relevant to the future of spatial and temporal environments. The role will also require you to prepare and deliver relevant high-quality programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A PhD is required in a relevant discipline area.
