The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) proudly announces new faculty who joined the College this fall across a range of programs and contemporary approaches to art, design and media teaching and scholarship.
This fall, MICA is thrilled that acclaimed artist and longtime educator Bill Gaskins and acclaimed scholar, historian, curator and artist Dr. Deborah Willis will be joining the college.
Gaskins, who joins MICA as the new director of Photographic and Electronic Media (MFA), is an inspiring interdisciplinary artist and scholar with an entrepreneurial spirit and a bold vision for this rigorous photography and media-based graduate program. Bill’s depth of experience represents a rich tapestry of practice, teaching and research in photography and media. Bill comes to MICA from an interdisciplinary department of art at Cornell University and has taught at School of the Art Institute and Parsons School of Design. Throughout his career, Gaskins’ teaching has identified 21st-century literacies around the intersection of race, class, gender, and structural inequality and his course content connects the past with the present and reveals the politics and problems of visual representation. He has a distinctive enthusiasm for MICA and Baltimore, which he sees as ideal sites for this program, and he is planning a curriculum that advances thought leaders in photography and media who are better prepared for their lives as artists after graduation.
Willis will join the Photography Department for the 2019–20 academic year as the inaugural Stuart B. Cooper Endowed Chair in Photography. Willis is a university professor and chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, and has an affiliated appointment with the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Social & Cultural, Africana Studies, where she teaches courses on Photography & Imaging, iconicity and cultural histories visualizing the black body, women and gender.
